Venue continues to grow despite hard economic times
Chester, N.Y. (December 23, 2011) – The Castle Fun Center now has expanded to a 50,000-square-foot indoor area and increased its grounds to 11 acres of outdoor activities for all ages. This space includes the addition of the new Ballocity interactive ball play experience. The Castle has also extended its offerings to include a newly renovated arcade area and mini bowling lanes, as well.
The Castle is now the only venue in the region that offers the highly popular Ballocity. “This is the greatest interactive ball play experience ever; both kids and adults will have a blast!” said owner Brian Leenjtes. “It consists of multi-level platforms, interactive blasters, cannons and buckets that propel, throw, vacuum, and dump thousands of foam balls. You have to experience it!”
In a time when most local companies are cutting back or refraining from investing further in their businesses, The Castle Fun Center is going on offense.
“As one of the only venues in the Hudson Valley that offers a wide range of interactive fun activities, we feel the need to keep pushing the envelope on our offerings. What has made the Castle Fun Center so successful has been our ability to offer the widest range of family and group activities. We also want to keep the Castle fresh with new interactive experiences.”
Leentjes added, “We’re making these investments in the Castle Fun Center because we believe that it’s the best way to combat whatever the economy throws at us.”

Art series for Elant residents, community members to be launched early next year
GOSHEN, N.Y. (Dec. 21, 2011) – Elant, the Hudson Valley’s premier provider of senior health care and housing solutions, announced today the creation of the Jeffrey A. Weiss Memorial Art Series, a program that will provide free art classes and exhibits to residents of Elant at Goshen, as well as to the senior community in early 2012.
The series was made possible through a bequest from the estate of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Weiss. The couple established the fund in memory of their son, Jeffrey, who had a passion for the arts. Participants will have instruction in numerous art forms including painting, sculpture, writing workshops, dance, theatre, poetry, music and more. In addition to twice-monthly formal instruction by local artists who will come to Elant, the series has plans to include monthly art exhibits, performances and presentations which will coincide with the month’s featured art medium. An art show of participants’ work is planned for September.
“The Weiss’ bequest allows Elant to enhance the quality of life for its residents, as well as perpetuate Jeffrey’s name in a most meaningful way,” said Melissa McCoy, Elant’s Director of Corporate Initiatives. “The Jeffrey A. Weiss Memorial Art Series is a perfect example of just how beneficial planned giving can be for a not-for-profit. We are so grateful to the Weiss’ for their thoughtful planning for Elant residents. It is our honor to facilitate the program in their son’s name.”
The Elant Foundation chose to collaborate with Dawn Ansbro, Executive Director of the Orange County Arts Council and Shawn Dell Joyce, head of Wallkill River School, to enable diverse resources and network exposure for artists. Additionally, an impressive committee of community members interested in the arts, Elant and their communities has volunteered to evaluate artists and plan the year’s program. “The series enables the public and the art community to become engaged in the Elant community,” said McCoy.

The Ruby Group worked with President Container Group, a leading manufacturer of cardboard boxes and displays, to completely retool the 527,400-square-foot former Wakefern distribution facility in the Town of Wallkill.
NAHB Commercial Builders Council recognizes The Ruby Group’s fast, efficient completion of large project
GOSHEN, N.Y. (Dec. 21, 2011) – The recent renovation of a Middletown, N.Y., manufacturing building has garnered national recognition for The Ruby Group, the Goshen, N.Y.-based development, consulting and construction-management company that updated the half-million-square-foot space.
The project was honored by the NAHB Commercial Builders Council, which sponsors the annual Awards of Excellence for light commercial projects on behalf of the National Association of Home Builders, with an Honorable Mention for its entry. The Awards of Excellence recognize achievements in design, market appeal, aesthetics, challenges faced during building and overall success of commercial projects that are either built or renovated and range in size from less than 5,000 to more than 100,000 square feet.
“The Ruby Group is truly honored to receive this national award,” said Peter Berman, president of The Ruby Group. “We are proud of the work we do on behalf of all of our clients. This project was very satisfying because of the extensive scope of the work and short timeframe of completion.”
The Ruby Group worked with President Container Group, a leading manufacturer of cardboard boxes and displays, to completely retool the 527,400-square-foot former Wakefern distribution facility in the Town of Wallkill. This unique industrial facility now houses President Container Group’s new offices, a state-of-the-art corrugator imported from Italy, multiple machines that turn corrugated sheets into finished products, new rooms where the printing templates and dyes are made, complete maintenance shop, in-house wastewater treatment facility, dust collection system, starch silo, caustic containment area and renovated office spaces. All of the new electrical fixtures meet the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority standards and are the latest technology in energy efficiency. The project employed many local vendors who worked closely with international vendors under the supervision of The Ruby Group.
“The Ruby Group should be commended for its successful renovation of this large space,” said Gene Graf III, 2011 chair of the Commercial Builders Council and owner of Gallatin Center LP in Bozeman, Mont. “The project was completed on time despite a very limited timeline, allowing its manufacturing company client to keep up production without interruption.”
The overhaul included replacing all of the lighting with high efficiency fluorescent lights and adding occupancy sensors to the offices. The Ruby Group also changed all the thermostats to seven-day programmable thermostats and installed low-flow, motion-activated plumbing fixtures.
Interior construction included excavating, surveying and re-pouring 2,500 yards of concrete based on the needs of the equipment that would occupy the space. Extensive drywall repair and new acoustical ceilings created a better working environment. Outside, The Ruby Group added a 40-by-40-foot concrete ramp, a silo and a trestle to bring the silo contents into the building.

Funding is considered a major win for BioHud Valley
NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. (Dec. 8, 2011) – New York BioHud Valley will have its biotechnology incubator. New York Medical College’s Biotech Incubator Center for Advanced Research in Westchester County will receive $4 million for its development as part of $785 million in awards announced today by Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo through the Regional Economic Development Council initiative.
The money will be used to further develop a biotech incubator at the Valhalla-based medical college. It will host startup biotech companies, research and development of medical countermeasures, disaster preparedness work, clinical training and other public health activities. At full capacity, the incubator is expected to create 140 full-time jobs and an additional 75 part-time jobs in the Hudson Valley. The incubator will include a training center offering current and future biotech workers in the Hudson Valley the opportunity to expand their education.
“This is a huge victory for BioHud Valley,” said Mike Oates, CEO and President of HVEDC. “We’re on the cusp of creating a world-class incubator, which will not only assist in the growth of our more than 80 biotech companies but also foster the entrepreneurial spirit of up-and-coming life science innovators and continue to create future growth for this vital industry.”
The incubator is part of an effort to create biotech jobs and to enhance preparedness against chemical and biologic threats.
“The Biotech Incubator at New York Medical College is going to be the birthplace of new cures, vaccines and most importantly – jobs, jobs and more jobs,” said Sen. Chuck Schumer. “From the day I first stepped foot on this site to tour the space, the potential for explosive growth was obvious. The Incubator and Training Center that we’re on our way to building will cement the Hudson Valley as a center of the biotech world and tap into an industry that’s enjoying unparalleled growth. We will keep working to make sure that everyone knows Westchester and its neighboring counties as BioHud Valley.”
“BioHud Valley is fast becoming the epicenter for biotech in New York and across the nation,” said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. “This funding for the BioHud incubator will kick-start the next great biotech companies to grow and create jobs right here in the Hudson Valley.”
The funding will be used to pay for expenses involved in the second of two phases of development of the property at the college. The first phase involved general construction renovations to the interior of the building and the next phase will involve building upscale research spaces for incubator companies to use.
“This is a huge win for the region because we will now be able to move forward with opening the Hudson Valley’s first biotech incubator space for startup and emerging life sciences companies,” said Laurence Gottlieb, Westchester County’s Director of Economic Development and NY BioHud Valley co-founder. “This was a team effort that started way before the regional councils were formed and we look forward to working on similar projects for the benefit of all Hudson Valley residents.”
“This is a major step forward in advancing scientific discovery and job growth at the same time,” said Robert W. Amler, MD, New York Medical College’s Vice President for Government Affairs and Dean of the School of Health Sciences and Practice. “It also proves the value of strategic partnerships – between the Hudson Valley Economic Development Corporation and NY BioHud Valley initiative, the Mid-Hudson Council and Business Council, county officials, dozens of biotech companies and our own researchers,” Amler said. New York Medical College is part of the Touro College and University System.
